A Regulated Health Care Profession:
Registered Massage Therapy is a designated health profession governed by the Health Professions and Occupations Act (HPOA). As regulated healthcare professionals, Registered Massage Therapists (RMT) provide essential care that can be accessed directly—no referral is required.
Effective June 28, 2024, the regulatory oversight of the profession transitioned to the College of Complementary Health Professionals of British Columbia (CCHPBC). This body was formed through the amalgamation of the colleges for Chiropractors, Massage Therapists, Naturopathic Physicians, and Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners. This unified regulatory framework ensures a high standard of "safe, effective, and ethical care" across the province.
While RMTs must follow specific clinical operational rules similar to other private businesses, they are primarily bound by stringent provincial legislation and the standards set by the Ministry of Health.
The Importance of the "RMT" Title
The title Registered Massage Therapist is a legal designation., that is exclusively allowed to practice Massage Therapy since 1946, and in accordance with BC law is a regulated profession under the title remains protected by law.
Under the Massage Therapists Regulation, only 'registrants' of the College may legally provide "massage therapy" or use the following protected titles:
Why does this distinction matter?
It guarantees that your therapist has met the rigorous educational and ethical standards required for public safety. British Columbia is one of only five provinces (alongside Ontario, Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island) to recognize massage therapy as a regulated health profession. This recognition is why RMT services are covered by most third-party extended health insurance providers.
Out-of-Province Practitioners & Insurance
To practice in BC or issue receipts for BC insurance claims, a therapist must be registered with the CCHPBC. Practitioners from other provinces must qualify with same educational requirements, that include passing the board examinations and then registering with the CCHPBC to practice as an RMT in British Columbia. Otherwise, all unregulated non-RMTs/non-registrants may perform massage as "body-workers", and are restricted from using any of the four restricted titles and can not claim to practice massage therapy, nor are they recognized by third-party insurers.
Verify Your Therapist
For your protection, all qualified RMTs are listed on a Public Register on the CCHPBC website. You can verify a practitioner's status or search for insurance-approved therapists through the College website.
